History of Anafi, Greece

In ancient mythology it is mentioned in the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. This is the island that was created by an arrow from Apollo’s bow and pointed out to Jason in the midst of a terrible storm that almost sank his ship. The name Anafi is a derivative of the word “Anefani” which means appeared. To thank Apollo, Jason later established an alter, and later still the temple of “Anafeou Apollon” translated as “Apollo appeared”. This site is now the courtyard of the monastery of Zoodochou Pigis. Unfortunately, the practice of building churches on ancient temple sites was largely practiced throughout Greece over the centuries and fortunately some very important sites have escaped this dubious practice.
